Demographers name the 21st century as the Century of Seniors. They are of the view that, the increase of the life span due to the expansion of the health services and the gradual decrease of the birth rate as causes for this rapid increase of the adult population.
There are number of challenges that caretakers have to face due to this increase of the adult population. We must get prepared to face these challenges. According to the census and statistics, by 2012, out of the total population, 20% are of the population of more than 65 years.
We generally consider those who are above 60 years as senior citizens. But, it is those adults who are above 70 year persons that we admit in to our homes.
Senior citizens are divided in to three categories, based on the age.
1. 60 – 69 Young senior citizens
2. 70 – 79 old senior citizens
3. More than 80 older senior citizens
However, our intention is to build up a physical, mental, social and spiritual environment within our homes that is conducive for spending the old age life for persons of any category. We are continuously dedicated willingly towards this objective.
We, as a Buddhist charity organization, providing the priority for the timely requirements, through coordinating the officers, members of the management committee and advisors of the center towards further developing the background required for them to live comfortably and serenely within a religious environment.
We are engaged in more practical approaches related to various activities pertaining to occupants, such as directing them for modern medical treatments, maintaining sick rooms, conducting religious programs for their mental wellbeing, organizing pilgrimages, providing facilities for religious a activities, encouraging mental developments, providing food, medicine etc. and listening carefully to them and taking action on their needs.
We are conducting activities of these homes in accordance with the S5 concept, and also implement accounting and administrative functions in a proper manner. Implementation of plans is being done on short term, medium term and long term basis.
We are continuously dedicated to provide our services in utilizing resources in a maximum manner, productively and in a transparent way.

Mudalindu Amarasekara Senior Citizens’ Home Male / Female
Makandura, Atakalanpanna, Ratnapura
Mudliyar Patrick Louis Amarasekera established the Mudliyar Amarasekera Senior Citizens’ Home in 1988, in the house (Walavuva) owned by him. The name of this house has an historical significance, as this was the residence of Sir Francis Molamure, the first Sinhalese Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka during the colonial period of the British Empire. Later it was inherited by the ancestry of Mundalindu Amarasekera..
This home had become out of action since 1993, when after the death of Mundalindu Amarasekera, the manager who was administering this home, had attempted to get the ownership this property through a forged deed. After a trial held in courts, this house and its property were handed over to the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress. The renovation work of the Walawwa and the Elders’ Home is currently underway, and the Hon. President of the Congress is working together with the Board of Management, through taking steps to commence the functioning of this home without delay.
This is managed by a Board of Management appointed, under the full supervision of the National Social Services Council of the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress.
